According to TimesLive, the NSRI has issued a shark warning for the Garden Route, stretching from Nature's Valley and Mossel Bay (this area includes the river mouth and beaches on the Indian Ocean off of The Island) for this holiday weekend.  Please mind your toes and any other bits you value...

Garden Route holidaymakers have been warned to beware of sharks over the long weekend.

The National Sea Rescue Institute said there had been a number of great white sightings in the Plettenberg Bay area on Friday.

The organisation urged caution between Nature’s Valley and Mossel Bay.

“The increase in shark inshore presence at this time of the year is part of the normal aggregation of these animals‚” said a statement.

“Sharks are aggregating in this area at this time‚ as they have done in previous years‚ to take advantage of naturally occurring prey like seals and fish close in shore.”

The NSRI said most of Friday’s shark sightings were near the Robberg peninsula‚ which presented “a rare opportunity for sightseers to view shark activity”.

Shark Spotting & Attack Contingency Meeting in Mossel Bay - Friday, Nov 6th

31/10/2015

After last week's shark attack in Stilbaai, the issue of human-shark conflict is back in the local news.  Former pro surfer, Llewellyn Whittaker, who runs Waves School of Surfing - and who survived a rather scary encounter at The Point a few years ago - is calling for a shark spotting programme, as well as a committee to regulate chumming activity in the Bay.

Llew has called for a meeting which will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 6th at the offices of Omni Marketing, 112 High Street (corner of Church and High streets) in Mossel Bay.  If you're concerned, attend and get involved!

If you need a reminder, you'll see from the Sharks, Chumming & Cage Diving section of the IRA website that the Great Brak River mouth is pretty well right in the thick of things, shark-wise, during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, the Mossel Bay Advertiser is running an online poll on the subject - here is a snapshot of the results as of this morning (you can find the poll on the paper's homepage and click to vote yourself, if so inclined):

Perfect Timing for a Low Tide Beach Walk from The Island to Little Brak

2/1/2014

With the particularly low tide this morning it was a perfect day for a walk to the Reebok tide pools (and to Little Brak beyond).  If you only want to go as far as the tide pools, it's about a 45 minute walk.  Be sure to bring tekkies or old beach shoes so you can explore them without cutting your feet on the barnacles and mussels).

Oh, and if you're wondering what the helicopters are doing circling overhead - usually off Reebok - they are no doubt spotting Great White sharks (see the Ocearch shark tracker images below - but note these are just for the sharks that are tagged - and in order to "ping" the transmitting device must be at the surface & dry for 90 seconds - meaning this just scratches the surface of shark activity in the area).
