Canoeing & Kayaking

If you prefer to be on top of the water, rather than in it, then consider taking a gentle paddle around The Island's tranquil waters - or head up the river and into the village. You're see plenty of fish jumping alongside your canoe or kayak, especially in the shallows where they like to feed, but don't let them distract you from the other sights - like fish eagles, egrets, spotted dikkops and cranes. Keep an eye out for the southern red bishops who like to weave their nests in the reeds along the river's shore near the village. And be sure to keep your strength for the paddle back - you'll often find there's a bit of a headwind, particularly in the afternoon.
If you're looking for a great kayak - be it a single or a double - Tracy & Art at Kaskazi Kayaks in Cape Town to be knowledgeable, friendly - and they have a great product line. Whether it's one or a whole flotilla, they'll arrange delivery to The Island (or elsewhere).
