About Me
Originally from Canada, my wife & I took a few months off after wrapping up one of our international assignments in Johannesburg in late 2001. During our time in Jo'burg, we'd taken plenty of trips so by then we'd seen most of this beautiful country - and South Africa and her people had found a special place in our hearts - but it was time to seriously explore the Southern Cape!
First we stayed in Reebok in the downstairs rental flat of a friend's parents (where we were introduced to snoek cooked in a potjie on an indoor braai, the tide pools & swimming holes, but probably most importantly, to Munro's in Little Brak for oysters! Thanks, Roy & Sonja!). Then we moved on to The Point Village in Mossel Bay where we rented a refurbished fisherman's cottage for a few months. We explored the whole area from beyond Plettenberg Bay all the way down to Cape Town and virtually every nook & cranny in between. We had a lot of fun, made good friends and ended up returning to the Point for a couple of seasons - but for some reason we'd often end up on the beach at the mouth of the Great Brak River, admiring The Island and its peaceful, cosy community (when we took a moment out from body surfing or riding the river in & out with the tide, of course). So, perhaps it was serendipity when we returned in 2004 and discovered an unadvertised place on The Island for sale. Needless to say, we've enjoyed it here ever since.
This website was put together to keep fellow residents & visitors informed about what is happening in our little community (input is always welcome!) and activities or road trips in the Garden Route - sharing information that might make visitors' stays even more enjoyable. If you have a question about something in the area, drop me a line - I'll do my best to help you out. Though a link to the Island Residents' Association website is provided as a convenience, this website (TheIsland@GreatBrak) and its contents should not be seen to be sanctioned by the IRA, its Executive or membership - instead, it's merely a personal labour of love, and as such, solely contains the personal opinions and experiences of the author.
