Great Brak River Mouth Opening for Easter 2015 - It's Happening

31/3/2015

Thanks to the intervention of the Island Residents' Association, CSIR, the Department of Water Affairs and Eden District Municipality, the mouth of the Great Brak River is currently being prepared for an Easter breach by Mossel Bay Municipality.

A preparatory channel is currently being excavated, with the actual breaching, which requires a release of water from the Wolwedans Dam, taking place after high tide tomorrow (Wednesday) around 15h00, dependent upon wave height conditions, of course.

The Great Brak River is classified as a Temporarily Open/Closed estuary, and this opening is being done not only for the sake of holiday-makers enjoyment, but also to ensure estuarine health, the health of bathers, and as a precaution against unexpected rainfall given the high water levels in the Dam.

Eden District Muncipality, who is coordinating the activity, has requested that members of the public should please not approach the channel at any stage until the mouth has been fully opened.

With the mercury having already hit 39° celsius today, it's going to be more than welcome.  Enjoy the water, folks!

Crabs - Coming or Going?

20/3/2015

I spotted 3 crabs at the river mouth as we set out for our low tide beach walk.  It's a bit hard to tell from the pics, but based on the direction of their tracks and the progress they had made by the time we got back 45 minutes later it looks like they were coming into the closed river from the ocean.  Cool!

These were pretty small - the largest was probably only about 15 cm's across (just the body, not the claws) - nothing at all compared to the "monster crab" that lurks under the water elsewhere around The Island!

The photo isn't the greatest - it's hard to see the camera app with the glare of the sunshine, and obviously, I didn't want to get too close...
