Always a popular spot to take out of town visitors... Be sure to try their famous Chicken Pesto (but bring your appetite!). Besides the food, the views are a feast for the senses as well - besides the roses and the incredible views of the hops-filled valley, the lavender along their driveway is growing like crazy - makes a great impression on the approach to the venue!

We were on a roll, so when we finished up with the Sedgefield markets, we decided to pop in at Timberlake Village to see what was happening there. Unfortunately, all of this market-hopping meant there was no time left in the day to hop on the bike...
They may be slow in Sedgefield, but they are no slouches.... their Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market and Scarab Village Market have been going for years and are always popular - but in the last year they've stepped things up a notch since the Outeniqua Farmers' Market in George got going - and they've added a new section between the two markets with even more foodstalls and crafts. Lauren's Deli Eatery in George (see Tripadvisor reviews) comes well-recommended and have a stall there. We had a couple of the the rather non-traditional prawn falafels which were pretty tasty (with a wasabi-mayo dressing, lettuce and pickled ginger) before doing the rounds in the markets and the nursery. Check them out the next time you're looking for a bit of an outing on the other side of Wilderness. See the Farm Stalls & Craft Markets section of this website for opening times and more info. The Outeniqua Farmers' Market in George is wildly busy this season - and for good reason: it's a great place to check out some local arts, crafts, hear some live music, buy your groceries (fresh produce, cheese, dairy - you name it), a plant from the onsite nursery and grab a lekker bite to eat (check out the quiches and savoury croissants at my favourite, French Connexion but get there early, as they are the "real thing" created by Steff and Emmy Aufschneider - see this article from the George Herald for more info). The market is open on Sundays during the holiday season - it's a bit quieter than Saturdays if crowds aren't your thing.
See the Farm Stalls & Craft Markets section of this website for more details, including location. Any local will tell you the best fresh fish comes from Viking Fisheries in Mossel Bay. Viking moved their retail shop up from the harbour to Bland Street a few years ago, but the same crew is still there behind the counter...
Another gorgeous day yesterday - perfect for the walk back & forth from Glentana. The dolphins were really putting on a show and there was a rumoured whale sighting nearby (whales have been spotted a few times in the last couple of weeks, by the paragliders in Sedgefield as well as hikers at Nautilus Bay, just past Dana Bay). What better way to top the day off with streaming Jimmy Buffet's RadioMargaritaville and preparing some cream-cheese stuffed jalepeno chillies? Not the mild ones which Woolies now sells, but the "Russian Roulette" variety found at Fruit & Veg City. Russian Roulette, you ask? Well, some are very mild, but some are definitely not... and you never know which one you're going to get. They give off their oil during the preparation which wafts through the air - thus the "Bear Spray" reference. :) And be sure to watch where you put your fingers afterwards, as you'll get a bit of a burn going.... And, yes, the generous glass of sangria for the chef obligatory.
Enjoyed a nice Valentine's dinner at the Transkaroo (had the Lamb Neck, of course) on Thursday, followed by a special "post-Valentine's" evening at Leila's Arms (Facebook and TripAdvisor) in George on Friday evening (had the Spinach Pie starter and Venison Pot main - both great). Excellent vocal entertainment from Voldi George, Petronel Baard and surprise guest attraction Johnny Apple (who, word has it, is off to the States where he has a recording contract). Johnny Apple stole the show - quite the amazing talent at just 15 years old! Best get to Leila's Arms quick if you haven't done so already as Gabrielle has her place on the market - sad for us that it may not be around for much longer.
[Note: Leila's subsequently moved - with Gaby and Nontosi re-opening as "Leila's Up-cycled" at Prince Vincent's Square on York Street (next to the Dros) in George on September 1, 2013. Call 044 870 0292 for reservations or more info] |
