The dolphins were really putting on an amazing show this morning - all the way from just past the river mouth to Pienaar- and Bothastrand - fantastic! The river mouth was just opened the other day, so it's also perfect for beachgoers.

Updated Dec 2014 Loadshedding Schedule for Greater Mossel Bay (including Great Brak River)8/12/2014 A bit late, but the Mossel Bay Municipality has just uploaded the revised loadshedding schedule for December, 2014 to their website. The only difference I can see from the November schedule is that for Stage 2, there will now be loadshedding on Sundays from 18:00 to 20:30 (previously, Sundays were excluded during Stage 2). Keep up to date with the monthly schedules on the Municipality's website here. I've uploaded the December schedule below if you want to save yourself a trip...

The full loadshedding schedule (including the less severe Levels 1 and 2) may found in the following file. I've noticed a few hits on the website with people looking for loadshedding schedules for good old Great Brak. With Eskom advising the Mossel Bay Municipality earlier in the day that Level 3 Loadshedding Status is now in effect, I thought it might be a good idea to post the schedule here. If you need to find it later, you can find it in the Links & Resources section of this website or on the Municipality's own site. Phase 3 Loadshedding Schedule: Here are some handy tips to keep in mind during loadshedding: Think about communication: Ensure that your cell phone is always fully charged when power is available and have the SAPS and your security service's telephone number on speed dial. Think about transport: Ensure that your vehicle (car, “bakkie”, motorcycle, etc.) always has fuel in the tank because petrol stations cannot pump fuel during power outages. Think about cash: Ensure that you have enough cash because ATMs cannot operate without electricity. Think about access, security and safety: If you have an alarm system installed, make sure the back-up battery has sufficient charge (depending upon the sophistication of your system and the number of sensors, it may last from 6-12 hours provided the battery is new and fully charged - be sure to check with your security system provider) Keep temporary lighting readily available, e.g. battery powered torches and candles. Make sure you put these items in places where they will be easy to find in the dark. Keep a torch (with fresh batteries) by your bedside at all times as well as in your vehicle in case you arrive home when it is dark. Think about your electronics: It is vital to unplug computer power cables from the sockets, as well as telephone cables from the modem when there is an imminent power outage. This actually applies to all sensitive equipment, including TVs and any other equipment that may have been in use during the time of the outage due to the surges in power that may occur when electricity is restored. Make use of surge protection devices to minimize the risk of potential damage.

For the last couple of years, I've made a few half-hearted enquiries about mountain biking on private property and established developments along the coast - all the way from Hoogekraal above Glentana and beyond to Pacaltsdorp and the area past Herold's Bay and Le Grand George. The scenery would be fantastic - and it's much closer than driving all the way down towards Knysna to do the Homtini. A few people did generously offer to let me come use their trails for hiking but no real mountain biking.
But good news - Bike Afrika has just announced they will develop 84 km's of interlinked trails - from beginner to full-on competition calibre - at Le Grande George. It's early days yet, but they'll be opening the first 3 trails to the public (free-of-charge) on Dec 20 & 21, 2014. Plans are afoot to offer bike rentals, storage and clubhouse/restaurant facilities and more. What a fantastic way to kick off the holiday season! So, what are you waiting for? Get your gear on and see you out there! |
