According to the latest load shedding schedule for the Greater Mossel Bay area, this means we can expect to be without power from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. this evening (in theory cutting short the load shedding period by 30 minutes, as it would normally run until 10:30 p.m.).
15 minutes ago Eskom announced Stage 2 load shedding would be under way from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. again today.

So with the power out at 12:20 or so, seems like hitting the beach for a nice long walk was in order. Good for getting the legs working again, too. The tide was already turning, but what the heck, it was a beautiful sunny day, and with a bit of a breeze it wouldn't be too hot. Despite it being a Saturday, I saw just 4 people on the 8 km stretch to Glentana. A few more on the way back. Took 2 hours 50 minutes (the Sports Tracker time indicates 3 hours 5 minutes, but that doesn't take into account the chat I had with a neighbour about braai plans!).
If you're thinking of doing it, my general rule of thumb is to allow 3 hours for a brisk-ish walk there and back in soft sand conditions, otherwise, 2.5 hours at low tide is quite do-able. Earlier this morning Eskom announced that Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented again today, starting from 8:00 a.m. For the Greater Mossel Bay area, including The Island, the load shedding schedule indicates we can expect to be without power from 12 noon until 2:30 p.m.

So what else is new? Ha! With low tide at 10:58 a.m., heading out around 9:00 a.m. makes for perfect walking conditions there and back.
Eskom has declared an escalation to Stage 3 load shedding - according to the latest schedule, regardless of whether this is "3A" or "3B", this means we can expect to be without power from 20:00-22:30 this evening (we were spared the other night, but not earlier today, so not sure how much longer our luck will hold).
I was up at the Great Brak Pump House on Jan 14th and this is what I saw: I reported it to the Municipality's Technical Department but hadn't heard if it was fixed or not, so I decided today was as good as any to take a walk up to find out - I figured I'd walk from The Island for a bit of extra exercise. And guess what? It's the fence has been fully repaired - thanks Mossel Bay Municipality!
Although we were spared again last night, it appears we are not quite so lucky this afternoon: Stage 2 load shedding kicked in at 12:21 p.m., slightly later than scheduled (it was to have been noon).
Under the Stage 2 load shedding schedule, we can expect to be without power until 2:30 p.m. today. You may wish to unplug any electronics in the event of a surge when power is eventually restored. New Loadshedding Schedule for Greater Mossel Bay (and The Island, Great Brak) - Feb 2, 20152/2/2015 IMPORTANT UPDATE: Effective July 1, 2015 there is a new load shedding schedule for the Greater Mossel Bay area - see this post for the new schedule. Until that time, the February, 2015 load shedding schedule (below) remains in effect. UPDATE: Check out the (free) GridWatch apps for either Android or iOS from News24 and receive load shedding notifications for locations you choose (Groot Brak, George, etc. - and yes, George is on a different schedule...) direct to your device as they are announced. Mossel Bay Municipality's Technical Department has just forwarded a new load shedding schedule for the area (it comes from Eskom). It is quite different from previous versions as not only are there 4 stages now (1, 2, 3A & 3B), but it is also day-of-month-dependent. You may download it below or find it on the Municipality's own website which has also been updated.

After the flooding in 2006, the famous Outeniqua Choo Tjoe which ran along the coast was halted - the tracks near Herold's Bay and Wilderness were badly damaged. Unfortunately, despite many attempts to resurrect the line (or turn it into a cycleway), it still remains out of commission. But.... If you're looking for the next best thing, there's the Diaz Express which launched this year (as an extension to the even smaller run the Outeniqua Power Van operator did between Hartenbos & Mossel Bay in 2013 and 2014). Each Wednesday, assuming there are a minimum 21 passengers, it runs from Mossel Bay to Great Brak and return (after a stop at the Transkaroo restaurant). Perfect for enjoying amazing view of the coastline! Here's their schedule for February 2015: Booking is absolutely essential for the Great Brak leg (otherwise it only runs between Mossel Bay and Hartenbos). For more information, check out their Facebook page or read this article in the Mossel Bay Advertiser.
